Two Tips to Follow When Choosing Internal Shutters for Your Home

Here are two tips to follow when choosing internal shutters for your home.

Consider opting for café-style half-shutters for some or all of your street-facing rooms

If you have rooms in your home that face a street, and you only use them during the day (such as your home office), you might want to opt for café-style half-shutters for these areas, as they only cover the lower half of a window. The reason you should consider using these shutters is that in these rooms, the main purpose of the shutters will be to give you privacy by stopping anyone on the street from seeing into these rooms. If you only use the rooms during the day, you will not need the shutters to block out light (like you would if these were bedrooms).

Café-style shutters will give you privacy by obscuring the lower half of the rooms' windows but will still allow natural light to come in through the top half of the windows. In contrast, if you were to use full-sized shutters in these rooms, you could not achieve the level of privacy you might want in these rooms during the day without blocking out most of the sunlight at the same time.

Choose wide slats if you lack mobility in your hands

If you have arthritis or another illness that causes hand stiffness, or if you do not have much time to clean, you should choose shutters with wide slats instead of narrow ones. A shutter set with the former will have fewer slats than a set with the latter, even if the shutter frames' sets have the same dimensions.

Choosing a shutter set with a relatively small number of wide slats will take less time to clean than a set with a higher number of narrower slats. Furthermore, having fewer slats to clean will mean that even if your hands are stiff, dusting the shutters is unlikely to leave them feeling sore or exacerbate their stiffness.

It should be noted, however, that wider slats will create larger openings when they are tilted than narrower slats and so are best suited for rooms in which you are not fussy about the exact amount of light you want to let into the rooms and do not need a lot of privacy at all times. If you have questions about shutters, contact a shutter supplier. They can provide additional information.
