Two Tips for Those Who Are Renovating a Big Bathroom

Even though you might appreciate the spaciousness of your home's big bathroom, renovating a bathroom that is generously proportioned can be quite hard. Here are some tips to follow when doing your bathroom renovations.

Give the bathroom a centrepiece

One of the challenges of renovating a big bathroom is its current layout. Because a toilet, a bathtub, a shower and a sink don't take up that much space and are usually attached to or placed right beside the room's walls, you can end up with a lot of empty space in the middle. This can give the bathroom an empty, abandoned atmosphere.

If you don't want this, then you'll need a centrepiece. The best item to use for this purpose is a freestanding bathtub; ideally, a large one. Simply by fitting the bath in the middle of the room, you will instantly resolve the empty look that it previously had. However, putting the bath in this position will also make your bathroom look luxurious.

If you do this, you should ensure that your contractor uses beautiful components for the freestanding bathtub's exposed plumbing parts (ones made from cast iron would be great). Whilst plastic plumbing pieces are fine for standard tubs that have panels that will hide these parts, they are not a good choice in this situation, as they might take away from the opulent look the centrally-placed bathtub creates.

Use flooring that has a busy pattern

When picking out bathroom flooring, you should ensure that it has a busy pattern. This will help to make the bathroom look less empty and excessively large, as flooring with a busy pattern will usually make a room seem slightly smaller. You don't need to worry about the pattern making the bathroom look overdone, provided you don't use wallpaper or wall tiles with an equally busy pattern.

Secondly, because cleaning the floor of a big bathroom is more time-consuming than cleaning that of a smaller one, fitting flooring that has a busy pattern could be useful during the weeks when you're too busy to do a full floor clean in this room and instead only have time to give the areas by the tub, sink and toilet a quick mop. This is because the pattern will disguise the drops of toothpaste or shampoo that are on the rest of the floor, and ensure that the bathroom doesn't look too unclean, even when it's been a few days since you last mopped it.
