Five things to consider when choosing a security door

A security door can do a lot to keep your home and your family safe — as long as you choose the right type. What should you consider when you buy one?

How much security?

If you live in a neighbourhood with a lot of crime, you may want a door that will protect you form forced break-ins. In this case, a steel door with a steel grille will be ideal. If you are less concerned about security but want a door that will keep bugs out while still appearing secure, an aluminium door should be enough.

Visibility

If you want a good view of the outside, you will need to consider the infill for your door. Steel bars or grilles will be the most secure option, but they will obscure the view. If being able to see through the door is more important than security, you can go for an aluminium grille, but if you need security as well as visibility, you will need a door with stainless steel mesh.

Fire safety

Make sure that you will be able to open the door quickly and get your family out in the event of a fire. The door should have an emergency release feature, and you should make sure that everyone in your family knows how to use it. You should also ensure that any keys that are necessary to open the door are easy to access should there be an emergency.

Cost

By and large, the more security you want, the more you will have to pay for. A good steel door will cost more than an aluminium one, but beware of going for the cheap option if it isn't thick enough or doesn't meet industry standards

Company reputation

Make sure you are purchasing from a company with a well-established reputation. Remember, you don't just need a strong door; you need it to be properly custom-fitted. Gaps of a millimetre at the sides will be enough for a criminal to get leverage to open it, and the door is only as strong as the frame to which it is fitted. How well your chosen company fits the door will make all the difference to the security of your home.

If you have any concerns, talk to a reputable supplier about your needs, and you will be sure you are keeping your home and your family as secure as possible.
