Design Options for a Glass Splashback

A glass splashback can be customised to complement virtually any kitchen colour scheme or design; this flexibility is one of its main benefits. But many options translate into many decisions. So here are some ideas on how to customise yours.

Colouring Your Splashback

One way to decorate a glass splashback is to back-paint it. You can choose from a range of colours, with matte or gloss finishes. When selecting the hue, you could turn to other elements for inspiration as repeating the colour of something else will help to unify the kitchen. In a white and neutrally toned coloured scheme, you could choose a shade of glossy white. This will highlight the reflective quality of the glass itself. Alternatively, within an earth-toned kitchen, you could back-paint it in matte dark-grey to match with similarly toned cabinets.

Usually, you will have other options besides solid colours, including pearl, satin or metallic finishes. In an area that features stainless steel fixtures and appliances, a metallic splashback can work to highlight those components and to tie everything together. Otherwise, you could imitate the tones of smaller accent items such as seating or light fixtures. Or, another option might be to repeat the colour of kicker panels on a kitchen island.

Additional Customisation Options

Further possibilities for decorating a glass splashback include digital prints, using photos, illustrations or other artwork. This provides an opportunity to showcase a favourite cityscape or pet picture. You could either go for full colour or else for a striking black and white print. Another direction you could take is to find an attractive pattern and to have that replicated on the splashback. This could include a pattern that mimics surfaces, such as stone, timber or tiles.

Images typically need to be of a high resolution to produce quality results. Also, consider the image proportions when making your choice. If a splashback is low and wide as most are, a portrait or tall picture may not translate well.

A further possibility for custom made kitchen designs is a mirrored splashback. Such a feature can totally transform a room, creating a marked focal point. The mirrors will reflect the natural light that enters from nearby windows or doors, which will have the effect of brightening up the whole area. But these work best in minimalist kitchens without too much clutter. Otherwise, the mirrors can tend to amplify all the detail creating a too-busy look.
