Blinds vs Screens vs Shades: What Are the Differences?

When it comes to covering your windows, you have many different options. Curtains are the traditional and most common window coverings people use. However, homeowners are realising that blinds, security screens and shades are even better options for providing privacy, security and energy efficiency.

Some types of window coverings, such as blinds and shades, are often used interchangeably. However, these are two different types of coverings, and each comes with its own pros and cons. Security screens are also another option for your windows.

Here's a closer look at each of these window coverings and their positive and negative features.

Blinds and their benefits

Blinds are perhaps the most flexible window coverings available. They come in a multitude of shapes, materials, sizes and designs. From wooden blinds that provide warmth and class to your home to PVC blinds that can be layered with multiple colours and textures, the choices of blinds may seem endless.

Many blinds consist of slats that stack against each other and are controlled by cords. The cords open or close your slats to provide superior light and privacy control. In fact, blinds provide the best control for incoming light and can be customised to fit any type of window.

The only downside to blinds is that they're more complicated to install and can be costly to maintain if they become damaged.

Security screens and their benefits

Security screens are among the most secure materials you can place on your windows. Such screens provide protection against strong winds, insects and even intruders.

You can also vary the mesh material for your screens to meet the security needs of your home. For example, stainless steel meshing is sturdy and prevents people from cutting through the mesh and smashing your windows. The meshes are also thick enough to reduce leaking air, yet large enough to allow light to pass through.

Most security screens are placed on the outside surface of your windows. They can also be used along with blinds or shades for a more comprehensive window coverage in your home.

Shades and their benefits

Shades are perhaps the most cost-effective of the three discussed in this piece. Shades are often made of a flexible material such as polyester, cotton or PVC. They're characterized by their softness, ease of installation and ease of maintenance.

Shades are also very effective at blocking out the sun, as you can select a thick fabric to reflect sunlight off its surface. An opaque material is also useful for privacy options (such as bedroom privacy). The only downside with shades is that they may not be as sturdy or durable as screens and blinds are.
