Two updates you should make to your home when your young child learns to walk

If you're the parent of a young child, there are certain updates you should consider making to your property when they learn to walk, in order to minimise the chances of your son or daughter being injured when they begin wandering around your home. Continue reading to discover what these updates are.

Extend the height of your deck's railing and add extra spindles.

If you have decking on your property and your child has recently mastered the art of walking, you should definitely make a few changes to this feature as soon as possible. Firstly, you should extend the height of the deck's railing. This will minimise the risk of your child trying to lean over the top of it and subsequently falling over the railing onto the ground. This is a particularly important step to take if your decking is positioned more than a couple of metres above the ground, as a fall from this height could leave your child with serious injuries.

Secondly, if the gaps between the spindles on the deck's railings are quite large, it may also be a good idea to fit extra spindles, in order to make these gaps a bit narrower. The reason for this is as follows; if your child is still very small, they may be able to squeeze through the large gaps between the spindles. If this happens, they may end up falling off the decking and sustaining injuries. By reducing the size of these gaps, you should be able to prevent an accident of this kind from occurring.

Add non-slip rugs to areas of your home that feature hard flooring

If there are areas of your home that feature laminate, hardwood, tile or linoleum flooring, then it is worth purchasing some non-slip rugs for these parts of your property. The reason for this is as follows; if your child can now walk,  they will probably spend much of their playtime running around your home.

If they do this on a hard floor, they will be much more likely to slip and fall over. If, for example, they run across a tiled floor whilst they are wearing socks, the lack of friction between their feet and the smooth tiles could easily lead to them slipping and falling.

Due to the solidity of this type of flooring, this fall could result in them breaking a bone or badly injuring their head.

By placing non-slip rugs on your hard floors, you can not only reduce the chances of your child slipping and falling over (as the rug will provide more grip underfoot) but can also minimise the severity of any injuries they sustain (as the soft rug will cushion their fall).
