Torn Between a Leather and Fabric Sofa?

Your friends or relatives may have chipped in their thoughts on leather and fabric sofas, but you may be still stuck with the decision. Note a few things that will make it easy for you to choose between a leather and fabric sofa based on your lifestyle.

Your Home Design/ Aesthetic

The first thing you need to figure out is if your home aesthetic suits leather or fabric sofas. This will help shortlist your options. In some cases, the aesthetic of your home may be complemented by both leather or fabric. If this is the case, consider the other factors mentioned below.

Do You Have Kids or Pets?

As your children play, they tend to get messy and stain your sofas. Cleaning might be easier if you go with leather sofas. Also, remember your children will not remain kids for long. If you are inclined to fabric sofas, you can get slipcovers that are machine washable.  The fabric sofas can also be protected against stains through the use of stain-protector sprays.

For pets, their fur/hair may get onto your fabric sofas, which can be difficult to remove. Their claws can be bad for the fabric, as they will loosen threads and shred your sofa. For leather sofas, scratches can prove difficult to repair. You can opt to have your pet trained to lessen this damage.

There are also different qualities of leather and fabric sofas. The higher the quality, the more durable, damage-resistant and expensive they will be. Your sofa salesperson should be in a position to inform you of the quality levels.

Are You Allergic?

Fabric sofas may trap dust, hair and other allergens. If you are allergic to various allergens, you would be safer going with leather sofas.

Colour

If you need a brighter colour like white, going for leather would make cleaning and maintenance easy for you, especially if your home environment is prone to dirt and stains, maybe from children, pets or dust. If you prefer dull colours, you can choose either leather or fabric. As mentioned above, you can use slipcovers to protect fabric sofas with bright colours to make maintenance easy.

Temperature

During cold weather, your leather sofas may become cold to the touch. However, they will warm up after a while at the area where you are seated. In hot weather, you might find them warm and at times your skin may slightly stick to the sofa. You can adjust your room temperature to remedy this.
