The Pros and Cons of Cut-to-size Blinds

Finding a blind to fit an oddly-shaped window isn't always easy. You can end up with a blind that is too narrow or wide for the window's width or one that is too short or long for the drop.

If you want an exact fit, buying a cut-to-size blind is an option. Here, you buy a blind that is too large for the space. You then cut it down to make it fit. What are the pros and cons of using a cut-to-size blind?

The Advantages of Cut-to-size Blinds

The main benefit of using a blind that you cut to match your own measurements is flexibility. If your window isn't the right size for an off-the-shelf blind, you can create your own custom size from the blind's base shape and size.

For example, if you have a roller blind, you may be able to shave some width off the blind to make it fit a narrow window. To get a perfect length for a venetian blind, you may be able to remove some of the blades to shorten the blind.

This may be more cost-effective than having a blind specially made for the window. You choose a blind you like and follow the instructions to cut it down. You also don't have to wait for the blind to be made.

The Disadvantages of Cut-to-size Blinds

Cutting a blind isn't always easy. If you make a mistake along the way, say if you don't cut the side of the blind straight, then your blind may fit the space better, but it'll look a bit amateurish.

You may also struggle if you need to remove parts of the blind, like its base attachments, to cut it to size. Getting everything back together again can be tricky.

Cut-to-size blinds also have limits. You generally can't cut that much off a blind, so it may be hard to get the right fit. Plus, you may have less choice over colours and fabrics with off-the-shelf products that can be cut. Not all blinds can be adapted this way.

If you have a non-standard window and want a blind that fits precisely, then you may be better off going for a customised solution. Some custom blinds companies will cut cut-to-size blinds for you before you take the blind home. Or, you can order a blind in the right colour and fabric and have it made to fit the exact measurements of your window.
